Digg
Digg is the largest social bookmarking site that allows people to bookmark and share articles/stories, images or videos from anywhere on the Internet. Users can vote stories up and down, what is called digging and burying. Many stories get submitted every day, but only the most Dugg stories appear on the front page.
Using Digg is very easy. Voting for stories is done by one click to “Digg” icon close to each post. To submit a story you just need to click “Submit New”, enter the URL of the page you want to submit and select whether it’s news article, video or image. On the next page, enter the title and desciption for your story and select icon you want to assign to your post. You’ll also have to type the captch text. After this, you’ll be asked to check if the story is not already listed on digg. If you want to make the bookmarking even more easier, you can download add-on or toolbar for your browser.
As it is SOCIAL bookmarking site, making friends is very important part. Once you submit a story you can “shout” it to your friends, what basicly means you ask them to digg it for you. Basically, you’ll not get your story on the front page unless you have a lot of “friends” who will digg your story.
Promoting your website or blog with Digg
From the point of promoting your site, Digg can be useful in two ways.
1. You can get treffic directly from Digg. If you have lot of friends who will digg your story and it reaches the front page, you can actually get a LOT of traffic from it.
2. Every story links to it’s actual location, so with every bookmark you get a link to your site. This can help you improve your search engine rangings as one-way deep link are probably the best possible link you may get.
From my personal experience
Don’t be agressive in posting stories from your own sites. Try to post news articles or something and submit pages from your site only from time to time. Also don’t post links that are apparently referral links. I got my first account banned just for posting one referral link to Digg.
